Kosovo Takes a Major Step in Regional Day-Ahead Market Coupling

Pristina, 20.11.2023The Ministry of Economy applauds the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by the energy regulatory authorities, transmission system operators, and power exchanges from Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Greece. The MOU was signed in Athens, and sets the countries up to couple their day-ahead electricity markets through the South-East European Electricity Market (SEE-MC) initiative.

Kosovo was represented at this landmark signing ceremony by the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO), the Transmission System and Market Operator (KOSTT), and the Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX).

This significant development would not have been possible without guidance and technical assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as well as support from Greek energy stakeholders.

The Southeast Europe Market Coupling (SEE-MC) initiative creates the necessary legal and regulatory framework to advance the development and integration of the pan-European electricity market. The integration process will be based on the model of the coupled markets between Greece, Italy, and Bulgaria, and will help improve the security of supply, increase competition and transparency, and ensure lower prices for consumers.

Kosovo’s pathway towards integration into the pan-European energy market introduces an era of improved energy cooperation across the Western Balkans.
