Earthquake with epicenter in Kleçka, Lipjan

Prishtina, 13.05.2024 – Based on the Seismological Network, the Kosovo Geological Service, and the Euro-Mediterranean Seismic Center, as well as the numerical analysis of the data of the seismic event, on 13.05.2024 at 18:04:01 local time, the territory of Kosovo was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.7 on the Richter scale, respectively with an intensity of III – IV on the Mercalli scale.

The epicenter of this earthquake was at the geographic coordinates: 42.500; 20.879, 30 km southwest of Prishtina, 10 km east of Malisheva, in the Kleçka area of the Municipality of Lipjan. The hypocentral depth was 7 km.

The earthquake did not have the potential to endanger citizens or cause any material damage due to its low intensity, therefore there was no room for panic or concerns. At the same time, this earthquake serves as evidence of the active nature of the region, which in the past has experienced earthquakes of high intensity. Based on the historical catalog of earthquakes, this area may generate earthquakes of high intensity in the future, as indicated by calculations and studies presented in the Kosovo Seismic Risk Map.
