Secretary General of Ministry of Economy Shabani Mullarama: Women’s empowerment is key to energy transition

Prishtina, 30 March 2026 – The Association of Women in the Energy Sector of Kosovo (AWESK) organized today an important event focusing on the key role of women in shaping the country’s energy future. This event brought together representatives of institutions, international organizations, academia and the energy sector, creating a common platform for discussion and cooperation.

One of the keynote speeches was delivered by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy, Leonita Shabani Mullarama, who emphasized the institutional commitment to an inclusive and just energy transition.

Shabani Mullarama stressed that the women’s empowerment in this sector is not only a matter of equality, but a necessity for sustainable development and innovation. According to her, the active involvement of women in policymaking and implementation of energy projects brings new perspectives and increases the quality of decision making.

In this context, “the inclusion of women in science, technology, engineering, as well as in decision making processes, strengthens their contribution not only in traditional sectors, such as health and education, but also in building a sustainable future. Such development requires full participation and equality for all,” she underlined.

The discussions focused on the importance of inter-institutional cooperation and the inclusion of women at all levels of the energy sector, from strategic decision making to the implementation of projects on the ground.

The main panel on the topic “Women Shape Kosovo’s Energy Transition” gathered experts in the field to discuss challenges and opportunities in the sector.

The panelists shared experiences and concrete ideas on improving energy efficiency, developing renewable sources and the role of education in preparing new generations of professionals.

At the conclusion of the event, AWESK expressed gratitude to its partners for their contribution to the advancement of the energy sector and the empowerment of women in this field.

This event was organized with the support of the “Energy Transition and Climate Mitigation in Kosovo” project funded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and implemented by the Ministry of Economy of Kosovo and the Luxembourg Agency for Development Cooperation (LuxDev).
