Electricity theft cost us millions of euros per year

Pristina, 16.08.2022 – Unauthorized use of electricity, commercial losses of KEDS, namely electricity thefts during 2021 would cost up to 110 million euros if they were all to be purchased at import prices, or put in other words, two units of “Kosovo B” Power Plant would have to work 31 days a year to cover only the electricity thefts.

While in 2022, if the energy price does not further increase on international exchanges, the thefts are foreseen to reach up to 99 million euros, which is equivalent to 26 working days of the two units of “Kosovo B” Power Plant.

Concerning the situation created with the electricity supply, the Ministry of Economy is in continuous communication with the institutions responsible for electricity supply.

We are undertaking measures to provide the necessary assistance to put an end to the unauthorized use of electricity together with the law enforcement agencies and the Electricity Distribution Company – KEDS which, based on the privatization contract, is obliged to stop electricity thefts.

These electricity thefts are not only criminal offences under the Criminal Code, they are already an unaffordable cost that must be paid from everyone’s money if not stopped.

The perpetrators of these offences use the stolen electricity irrationally, not for basic needs.

Unauthorized connections to the electricity network pose a risk to life and to the stability of the distribution network.

In the following days, our institutions will monitor KEDS’ actions in stopping electricity thefts. Meanwhile, additional measures are being coordinated concerning this phenomenon.

Therefore, dear citizens,
We encourage you, in addition to saving electricity, to report cases of electricity theft wherever you notice or become aware of such theft.

Their mass reporting will affect the security of electricity supply at this difficult time of energy crisis as well as prevent disasters.
