Valdrin Lluka: Digital Economy in Kosovo, an important sector for the country’s development

Prishtina, 12.10.2018 – “Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a special role in the development of a competitive economy, based on knowledge and innovations. This technology provides a higher quality of living for citizens, facilitates greater efficiency of work processes, and increases governance effectiveness and transformation”.

Minister Lluka made these comments in the opening remarks of the seventh edition of KosICT, attended also by the Minister of Innovations, Besim Beqaj, representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and representatives of foreign embassies in Kosovo.

Minister Lluka informed the participants on steps undertaken by the Ministry, such as customs and fiscal facilities provided for the sector, and on concrete steps towards the development of broadband infrastructure in Kosovo, enhancement of digital abilities and digitalization of Kosovo’s economy.

Also, Lluka said that significant advancements were made in the expansion of the mobile broadband network and introduction of new technologies, including 3G, 4G/LTE. The expansion of fixed internet networks in Kosovo exceeded 90%.

Similarly, the head of MED spoke on projects currently under way, including: Kosovo Digital Economy Program (KODE), extension of the broadband telecommunications infrastructure in uncovered areas, and support by the European Commission, through IPA II funds (3 million euro) in this sphere, aiming to develop human capacities for digital economy and support digital businesses. This project will be implemented between 2019 and 2021.

Minister Lluka expressed the continuous commitment and special attention of the Ministry he heads to the development of Information and Communication Technology sector.
