Prishtina, 13 December 2017 – Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj, chaired today the meeting of the Steering Committee for the Thermal Power Plant “Kosova e Re” Project. In this meeting, attended by representatives of American company Contour Global, an agreement on the development of Thermal Power Plant Kosova e Re was reached.

The commercial agreement to be signed in the following days will provide for an investment of over 1 billion euros in Kosovo, which is the largest investment is Kosovo’s recent history.
Upon finalization and commissioning, this project will ensure energy independence for the state and people of Kosovo.

The thermal power plant will entail a sole supercritical unit, with minimum efficiency of 40% and gross generation output of 500MW.

The co-generation component of the new thermal power plant will provide sufficient capacities for expanding the district heating project in other parts of the city of Prishtina, as well as Obiliq, Drenas and Fushë Kosovë.

This agreement is a result of the work vested for a number of years by Kosovo governments, and of the input of many individuals and experts, which managed to provide the country with a safe energy future in difficult times, and to execute a contract that provides maximal benefits for Kosovo institutions and people.

The development of the new thermal power is expected to commence in 2018, while its commissioning is envisaged in 2023. The power plant will employ latest technologies and thus have a significant impact on the reduction of gas emissions and environmental preservation.

The development of “Kosova e Re” thermal power plant is a historic event for Kosovo, considering that energy is a prerequisite for the country’s economic, politic and social perspectives.
