Mild earthquake in Kosovo

Pristina, 09.02.2026 – Based on the Seismological Network, the Kosovo Geological Survey and the Euro-Mediterranean Seismic Center, as well as the numerical analysis of the seismic event data, on 08.02.2026 at 23:09 local time, the territory of Kosovo (Southeastern Kosovo) was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale, respectively with an intensity of III-IV on the Mercalli scale.

The hypocentral depth of the earthquake was 7 km. The epicenter of this earthquake was 23 km east of Prizren and 3 km southwest of Shterpce.

The earthquake in question was noticeably felt by the citizens of the South Kosovo area. This seismicity did not have the potential to endanger citizens or cause any material damage due to its low strength. At the same time, these earthquakes testify to the seismogenic zone of Prizren, which is an active zone, according to calculations and studies presented with the Seismic Hazard Map for Kosovo.
