MED guarantees uninterrupted electricity supply throughout election process

Prishtina, 01 November 2013 – The Ministry of Economic Development and the Central Election Commission signed today a Memorandum of Understanding, with which these institutions commit to ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the election process.

This agreement was signed today by the Minister of Economic Development, Fadil Ismajli, and President of CEC, Valdete Daka, in the presence of representatives of ERO, KEK, KOSTT and KEDS.

Minister Ismajli said that the signature of this memorandum represents merely one of the actions envisaged to ensure that elections are conducted in the best possible manner, and it is for that reason that all energy sector stakeholders and operators, including ERO, are invited to the event.

According to him, all energy sector operators, such as KEK, KOSTT and KEDS, have performed the necessary preparations to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in all of Kosovo. Also, adequate measures were undertaken to procure sufficient quantities of electricity in the event of default of any unit of existing TPPs.

Ismajli expressed his gratitude to the Republic of Albania and KESH for their commitment to assist in the power supply, in the event that the need for this arises.

He added that no surprises are expected, and that operational teams will be on duty non-stop in all Kosovo regions, and will be ready to intervene in case of emergency.

For her part, the CEC President, Valdete Daka, said that the agreement executed today by MED and CEC guarantees power supply, subsequently that lights are kept on during election day, thus diminishing any possibility for manipulation or fraud.

Daka said she hoped that electricity supply-related problems faced during the previous elections will not be replication, adding that all measures were undertaken to ensure that everything goes well, underscoring the significance of these elections for Kosovo citizens.

Before the signature of the Memorandum with CEC, Minister Ismajli held a meeting with the heads of energy sector stakeholders in Kosovo: ERO, KOSTT, KEK and KEDS, asking them to ensure adequate coordination for providing uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the election process.
