Kosovo-Albania agreements enter implementation phase

Prishtina, 05 August 2014 – Minister of Economic Development Fadil Ismajli met with the Albanian Ambassador in Prishtina Qemal Minxhozi to discuss on strengthening of cooperation and realization of agreements executed by two countries in the sphere of energy, including implementation of agreements executed to date and preparations for future agreements.

The meeting served to discuss the achievement of implementation objectives that derive from the execution of the agreement on a common Kosovo-Albania energy market.

Minister Ismajli used the occasion to announce that the next phase of this cooperation will include the establishment of technical expert working groups, to work on the establishment of a common market, the first of the kind in Southeast Europe.

This cooperation optimizes electricity expenditure and results in savings in both countries. As such, it will result in elimination of different administrative barriers.

On a related note, in September Minister Fadil Ismajli will meet his counterpart Damian Gjiknuri, to initiate the technical teams’ work on the harmonization of legal and regulatory framework, aiming to achieve similar engagement and common tariff regulation by the process’ end.

Similarly, the meeting was used for discussions on the mining sphere, on which the execution of a memorandum of understanding is expected soon.

The focus in this sphere includes border areas, where closer cooperation among two countries would result in facilitation of administrative procedures in the sphere of exploration and exploitation, which would include removal of barriers related to such activities in both countries.
