KEK and US Company General Electric Sign Agreement

Prishtina, 07.04.2023 – Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) has signed an agreement with American company General Electric, valued at €56.2 million, to modernize the Steam Turbines of “Kosovo B” Thermal Power Plant.

To mark the signing of the agreement between KEK and General Electric (GE) to modernize the Steam Turbines of “Kosovo B” Thermal Power Plant, valued at €56.2 million, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, accompanied by the Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, and the Deputy Minister of Environment, Spatial Planning, and Infrastructure, Mr. Hysen Durmishi, visited the “Kosovo B” Thermal Power Plant.

The Prime Minister referred to this as one of the most significant events in Kosovo’s energy sector, mentioning that KEK’s thermal power plants units began construction over six decades ago and have been the sole guarantor of the stability of electricity supply in Kosovo since the 1960s.

He acknowledged that the power plants had been operating beyond their maximum capacity, and even KEK had noted that they had often been on the verge of breakdowns. The “Kosovo B” Thermal Power Plant, being the youngest of these power plants, had borne the greatest burden.

He highlighted the fact that the company with whom the contract was signed for the modernization of Kosovo B, to ensure that Kosovo B will remain strong for decades to come, is the same company that designed the technology for the power plants in 1983 and 1984.

As a result of this modernization, the capacity of the units will increase from 14 to 17 megawatts, and after the completion of the works on the High-Pressure and Low-Pressure Turbine, there will be no need for frequent capital repairs, but only every 8 or 9 years.

Prime Minister Kurti announced that the first energy auction on public land, with a capacity of 100 MW, will be launched at the end of this month, and many other similar competitive schemes will follow soon after.

All these, along with other ongoing projects such as Solar4Kosova and construction of storage capacities within the MCC grant, will ensure greater efficiency and sustainability, not only for the energy sector but also for the economy and national security, said Prime Minister Kurti. He also stated that responsible maintenance of public property and energy assets, as well as the full utilization of their potential, is a necessity.
