Haradinaj: There is no energy crisis, energy prices will not increase

Prishtina, 24.01.2018 – Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Ramush Haradinaj, thanked the Minister of Economic Development, Valdrin Lluka, and other actors of the energy sector for their engagement to overcome a critical period in terms of electricity supply, and excluded the possibility of increasing prices of energy.

Prime Minister Haradinaj made these comments during his joint press conference with Minister Valdrin Lluka, during his visit to MED, where he also met with heads of Departments and POEs, to discuss on the work ahead and challenges.

“It was not easy to deal with the energy sector situation and its implications, but we can now conclude that this critical period has passed and we have opened many other topics for the country, such as the mining industry, etc.”, said Haradinaj, adding that among the main topics was the water sector, respectively wastewater treatment, involving the Government, regional water companies, municipalities and external donors.

In terms of the lack of electricity, Haradinaj said that KEK currently guarantees that 83 percent of the energy demand is covered with domestic generation, and only 17 percent is imported. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and the reasons for power cuts sometimes are result of technical issues. The truth is that the situation with energy is stable, with the possibility of having 100 percent power supply by mid-February”, he added.

From his part, the Minister of Economic Development, Valdrin Lluka, said that he informed Prime Minister Haradinaj about some of the most urgent works that the Ministry of Economic Development has had in the development of several projects, creation of new values for economic projects in a place to generate economic development, and create new jobs. “Our focus remains the development of the energy sector to meet the consumption needs in the country. In addition, with the Prime Minister we discussed the mining sector, the development of “Trepça” and the opening of several mines to generate more economic activities in this area”, said Lluka.

The Head of MED said that they also discussed about other sectors covered by MED, and that the meeting was productive, and that soon there will be concrete actions, particularly with the signing of administrative instructions on strategic investments by foreign investors, which the Prime Minister just completed, opening way for foreign investments in the Republic of Kosovo.
