Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX) Day-Ahead Market Opens in Tirana

Tirana, April 11th, 2023 – Today marked the opening of the Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX) Day-Ahead Market in Tirana. The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Kosovo, Artane Rizvanolli, the Deputy Prime Minister of Albania, Belinda Balluku, and other representatives from Kosovo and Albania.

In her speech, Minister Rizvanolli expressed her pleasure in participating in such a special moment for the energy sector and emphasized that the joint market provides new business opportunities and more cross-border trade, resulting in efficiency benefits and higher service standards.

During the energy crisis that affected Europe and our countries, Rizvanolli highlighted that thanks to the excellent cooperation between Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) and Albanian Power Corporation (KESH), our countries were protected from expensive energy imports, saving around 50 million euros for the citizens of Kosovo, and a similar amount for Albanian citizens.

Furthermore, Rizvanolli emphasized that the Republic of Kosovo fully supports ALPEX to create conditions for a competitive electricity market, to orient the market towards import and export, and to offer flexibility for integration into regional and European electricity markets, and to develop transparent and proper rules for market participants, transmission and distribution network operators.

“We are stronger together, Albania and Kosovo together, along with our allies and neighbors with whom we share values and goals”, Rizvanolli said.
