Deputy Minister Arifaj part of online discussions on the current and future nuclear energy profiles

Prishtina, 29.03.2022 – The Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation has held an online meeting with the representatives of several countries on the topic of “Civil Perspectives of Nuclear Energy”, where Kosovo was represented by Deputy Minister of Economy, Mentor Arifaj, who was invited by Mr. David Turk, Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Energy.
 
Deputy Minister Arifaj stated that recent events in Ukraine have pushed the EU to commit to a faster decarbonisation of the energy sector, which will increase the importance of diversification of our energy sources and the possibility of investing in renewable energy sources.
 
Deputy Minister Arifaj also stated that Kosovo is in the process of drafting the National Energy Strategy 2022 – 2031 and the main vision is to achieve our long-term path towards decarbonisation by 2050, since the Republic of Kosovo is part of the Energy Community Treaty, and our goal is to have our energy legislation harmonized with European legislation and the Green Deal.
 
Arifaj further added that the focus of the Government of Kosovo is stability of electricity supply, affordability of prices, investment in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency which will affect the well-being of the citizens of our country. He also said that Kosovo does not envisage investments in nuclear energy, however it was a pleasure to be part of the discussions and understand more about the potential that the nuclear energy has in the energy transition.
 
This meeting was attended by representatives of governments from the US, EU, Estonia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Poland and various experts.
