Prishtina, 24.05.2019 – Today was held the meeting of the Working Group for reviewing the lack of cadre and the future of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Prishtina, established by the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, upon the proposal by the Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Valdrin Lluka.

The Working Group, comprised of all relevant stakeholders, has reviewed the current situation of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Prishtina, and proposed solutions and measures to be undertaken so that the department of Electrical Engineering in the University of Prishtina does not run the risk of being closed.

Minister Lluka, before the Working Group, reaffirmed the political will to find a long-term solution for the Department of Electrical Engineering, by emphasising the importance of this department in the preparation of cadres that will be needed in the energy sector, as one of the largest employers for the next 20 years. Also, Mr. Lluka informed the Working Group that he is working with national and international institutions/donors to ensure scholarships for those attending studies in this department.

Kosovo has passed a 10-year strategy on energy which foresees around EUR 3 billion worth of investments in this sector, while we are facing a lack of cadres in this field. The energy sector will be the key employer for the next 20 years, and we cannot, under any circumstance, allow the risk of closing the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in the University of Prishtina.
Following the closure of the PhD and Master programs, the Bachelor program is also at serious risk, mainly due to the lack of cadre, who almost all have retired.

The Working Group in accordance with its mandate shall, in the coming days, propose solutions to the Government of the Republic of Kosovo with regard to the Department of Electrical Engineering, which is vital to the development of energy sector in our country.
