Prishtina, 06.10.2017 – Kosovo’s Government approved today the Kosovo Energy Strategy 2017-2026, presented by Minister of Economic Development, Valdrin Lluka, who stated that his document aims to create a developed energy sector, which doesn’t damage the environment and health, and supports sustainable economic development and social wellbeing in Kosovo, as part of an open and competitive energy market.

In addition, Minister Lluka proposed for approval the Concept Paper for Publicly Owned Enterprises, which aims to change the new primary and secondary legal framework on Publicly Owned Enterprises, and stated that MED has worked intensively in drafting this document, with the support of donors, such as IFC.

“This document will define the duties and responsibilities of the mechanisms exercising this right and will increase the level of accountability related to the performance of POEs. The drafting of the new Law and the new bylaws will enable the harmonization of business plans of enterprises with general development and sector policies, enhanced efficiency and quality in the governance of POEs, and achieve a higher level of transparency in POEs and increase the level of customers’ trust”, said the Economic Development Minister.

Speaking on the Energy Strategy, the Minister stated that in addition to the engagement to achieve security of power supply, with the support of other institutions, domestic and international, as well as donors, the Government will strive to implement best practices of countries similar to Kosovo, and treat communities affected by electricity generation activities.

Finally, Minister Lluka stated that this strategic document fulfills all the criteria to be a clear guideline of Kosovo’s ten-year policies on the energy sector, and with the request of Minister Llula, the government cabinet approved this important document.

In addition, with the aim of preparing a debate in the Government, a Ministerial Committee on POEs has been established, pursuant to article 5 of the Law on POEs, which is obliged to submit proposals or remarks on POE issues.
