Works commence for the modernization and expansion of fixed optical-fiber infrastructure in the network of Telekom of Kosovo
Fushë Kosova, 05.05.2025 – The Caretaker Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the Caretaker Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, visited the start of works for the deployment of Telekom of Kosovo’s optical network, a strategic project that marks an important step in modernizing fixed communication services throughout the country’s territory.
The Prime Minister and the Minister were received by Telekom of Kosovo’s Chief Executive Officer, Burbuqe Hana, together with the Technical Director, Halil Krasniqi, members of the Board of Directors, and the Chair of the Telekom Trade Union, Lamih Balaj. They informed the Prime Minister and the Minister about the technical details, the geographic area to be covered, and the concrete impact this investment will have on service quality for citizens and businesses.
This project includes the modernization and expansion of optical infrastructure across Kosovo, including the northern municipalities, enabling access to:
- high-speed Internet (fiber),
- advanced television services (IPTV),
- modern fixed telephone lines.
“We are deploying optical fibers here in Fushë Kosova that will be very useful for households, apartment buildings, and also for the industrial zones for the businesses of our country. Telekom of Kosovo, under this leadership, inherited 50 million euros of debt, whereas in 2023 and 2024 together they turned it into a profitable enterprise with 15 million euros in profit. It is particularly important that, at the end of last year, together with technology giants from Sweden and Croatia, Ericsson and Tesla, we modernized the network and covered the entire territory of the Republic, including the four northern municipalities, with the 4G/4G+ and 5G network”, said Prime Minister Kurti.
Within the framework of this project, Telekom is replacing old and insecure technologies with advanced equipment from European Union and NATO member states, thereby enhancing cybersecurity and compliance with Euro-Atlantic standards.
After the modernization of the mobile network, which now covers 100% of the country’s territory with 4G and 5G, this investment in the fixed network marks the next step toward the full convergence of services, improving quality for consumers and increasing competition in the electronic communications market.
