Kosovo struck by an earthquake of 2.8 magnitude on the Richter scale
Prishtina, 31.07.2022 – Based on the Seismological Network, the Geological Survey of Kosovo and the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, as well as the numerical analysis of the seismic event data, on 31.07.2022 at 08:28:46 local time, the territory of Kosovo was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter Scale, namely with a Mercalli scale intensity of III-IV.
The hypocentral depth was 5 km.
The epicenter of this earthquake was – the location with geographical coordinates: 42.252, 21.327;
7 km southwest SW of Vitia;
6 km in the Northeast NE of Kaçanik;
2 km Northeast NE of Nikaj village.
The earthquake in question did not have the potential to endanger citizens, or cause any material damage due to its low strength, i.e. there was no room for panic or concern, and at the same time this earthquake proves that the area is an active area, which in the past was hit by high-intensity earthquakes based on the historical catalog of earthquakes. This area can also generate earthquakes of high magnitude in the future, according to the calculations and studies presented with the Seismic Hazard Map for Kosovo.
