€ 39.3 million for the construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mitrovica and Vushtrri

Prishtina, 14.03.2025 At the RWC “Mitrovica,” the Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Avni Zogiani, Sergiy Maslichenko, Director of the EBRD for Kosovo, Bedri Hamza, Mayor of Mitrovica South, Ferit Idrizi, Mayor of Vushtrri, Erden Atiq, Mayor of Mitrovica North, the Chairperson of the Board of RWC “Mitrovica,” Kumrije Kelmendi, and the Chief Executive Officer of RWC “Mitrovica,” Bashkim Kurti, participated in the ceremony of signing of the 39.3 million euros agreement for the construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mitrovica and Vushtrri.

On this occasion, the Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, stated that with this investment, there will be a genuine plant for treating waste waters.

“Mitrovica and Vushtrri are getting the Wastewater Treatment Plant through a 39.3 million euros investment, and subsequently Mitrovica North and Zveçan will also be connected. Waste waters will no longer be discharged into rivers, thus restoring the cleanliness to the Ibër, Sitnica, Lushta, and Trepça rivers,” said the Minister.

She stated that this project is part of a broader strategy of the government to modernize water management nationwide.

“This project is not isolated. It is part of a broader strategy of the government to modernize the management of waters and wastewater across the entire country. During this mandate, the Ministry of Economy has had record budgets of up to 500 million euros per year for investments in the water sector,” she said.

The construction of the Plant, in the amount of 39.3 million euros, is being implemented with the support of the European Investment Bank (EIB) with a grant of 19.8 million euros, the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) with a grant of 5 million euros, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) with 13.5 million euros and a grant of 700 thousand euros, as well as with the Swiss SECO providing support of 300 thousand euros.

In recent years, such treatment plants for wastewater have been completed in Gjakova, Peja, and Prizren, and they will also be constructed in Prishtina, Gjilan, and Ferizaj.
