Deputy Minister Arifaj took part in the Second Forum of the Energy Community – Just Transition
Prishtina, 12.07.2022- Under the organization of the Energy Community in Sarajevo of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was held the Just Transition Forum, which was attended by the Deputy Minister of Economy, Mentor Arifaj. There were also present the representatives from the European Commission as well as representatives from the signatory states of the Energy Community Secretariat.
Deputy Minister Arifaj stated that the energy sector in Kosovo is facing major challenges given that it relies on two old lignite power plants, where 90% of the electricity is produced by these two power plants, while adding that thanks to the work of the European Commission and the Energy Community Secretariat, the objectives of the energy sector—energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and greenhouse gas emissions—are expected to be finalized by the Ministerial Council in December 2021.
“This is an important step towards fulfillment of the objectives and obligations deriving from the Energy Community Treaty and commitments under the Sofia Declaration on the Green Agenda, and the Government of Kosovo is committed to fulfilling these objectives”, stated Arifaj.
Arifaj stressed that the Republic of Kosovo has just drafted the Energy Strategy 2022 – 2031, which lays the foundation for the transformation of the energy sector in the next 10 years, where the main goals of this strategy are the securing of electricity supply, financial affordability, integration into the regional market as well as environmental protection.
