Contract signed for the construction of five wastewater treatment plants and a chemical storage facility: Water quality in the Sitnica River will be improved

Prishtina, April 1, 2026 – The official ceremony for the signing of the contract for the construction of five wastewater treatment plants and a chemical storage facility was held at the premises of the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) Power Plant “Kosova B”, within the framework of the project “Improvement of the water quality of the Sitnica River through the construction of wastewater treatment plants at the Kosovo B Power Plant”.

The project will support the construction of five wastewater treatment plants and a chemical storage facility at the Kosovo B Power Plant, as part of an integrated system designed for safe, sustainable and long-term operation.

On this occasion, Minister Artane Rizvanolli emphasized that this project represents an important step towards improving the protection of environment in Kosovo, reflecting the joint commitment of local and international partners to sustainable development.

“This project is fully aligned with our sectoral priorities for strengthening public energy infrastructure as a key pillar of energy supply security. Our priority has not only been to maintain the generation capacities, but to improve them by making them more reliable, more efficient and in line with environmental standards”, she said.

In addition to Minister Rizvanolli, the event was attended by senior local and international representatives, including Fitore Pacolli Dalipi, Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning, Hubert Perr, Head of Cooperation in the European Union, as well as representatives of the Kosovo Energy Corporation and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

During the event, the objectives, expected results and impact of the project were presented, which include the creation of a more complete and reliable system for the management of various wastewater streams, including industrial waters, oily waters, waters affected by chemicals, flows from coal storage areas, atmospheric waters and sanitary waters.

The project is expected to bring significant improvements in the treatment of wastewater and reducing pollution of the Sitnica River, contributing to achieving the highest environmental and health standards.

This 12-million-euro project is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNOPS, in cooperation with local institutions, including the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, and the Kosovo Energy Corporation.
