Completion of works at Unit B2: TPP “Kosova B” will produce 35 MW more electricity
Prishtina, 20/08/2025 – The Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the Acting Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, visited the Thermal Power Plant “Kosova B” today, on the occasion of the successful completion of the works and the modernization project of the B2 generation unit.
Upon becoming operational, this unit is generating 35 MW more electricity than before, as well as guaranteeing the long-term stability of the electricity supply for the entire country.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Kurti underscored that this marks the completion of one of KEK’s most important projects since its construction.
“The efficiency of the system has increased significantly, thanks to new technology and the modernization of the turbine, which now guarantees greater generation with less internal energy consumption. Coal consumption has decreased from 1.3 to 1.15 per MW, demonstrating a significant improvement in the energy conversion process. For the same amount of MW produced, we now have lower pollution, thanks to the more efficient use of fuel. The lifespan of the unit has been extended for about 20 years, while the maintenance cycle of new equipment has been postponed from 6 to 9 years”, he stated.
On the other hand, Minister Rizvanolli said that following the investments in this unit, the generation capacity has increased by about 35 MW, without any change in the basic operating parameters.
“These investments were made after more than 40 years since the Thermal Power Plant “Kosova B” became operational, and it is precisely this short-term sacrifice that brings us these long-term results,” she underlined.
This modernization is the result of extensive technical and engineering work, which has included:
- Modernization of the turbine – which constitutes the heart of the generation system.
- Replacement of the electric generator busbars – to increase voltage stability and efficiency.
- Repair of the electrical circuit breaker – which ensures maximum network protection.
- Replacement of the economizer – to improve the steam heating process.
- Repair of the gas duct – to optimize circulation and maintain operating parameters.
- Replacement of over 4,000 condenser tubes – for higher thermal efficiency.
- Partial replacement of hangers – which increase the structural safety and stability of the system.
The turbine rehabilitation and modernization project in Unit B2 of the Thermal Power Plant “Kosova B” was implemented by KEK experts and collaborators. The project has resulted in a significant increase in generation capacities and higher system efficiency.
