Additional obligations for the Universal Service Supplier

Prishtina, 24 August 2022 – At the 94th meeting of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo held today, upon proposal of the Ministry of Economy, a decision on imposing additional public service obligation to the company acting as a Universal Service Supplier (USS) was made, in accordance with the commitment made previously by the Government to subsidize electricity tariffs for consumers.

By this decision, the USS is obliged to procure the electricity to supply consumers under most favorable economic conditions, and use the funds of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo in the form of subsidy dedicated to consumers to mitigate the impact of electricity tariffs on citizens.

The USS is also obliged to provide accurate information to consumers on the impact of the subsidy on their monthly invoice, while to the Ministry of Economy, detailed data on the use of the subsidy. At this meeting, a decision was also made to allocate funds in the amount of 41 million euros to the Ministry of Economy, to enable the disbursement of consumer subsidy funds for the period February – July 2022.

This amount is part of a 90 million euro commitment made by the Government of Kosovo in February this year, as a result of extraordinary review of electricity tariffs by the Energy Regulatory Office, aiming to mitigate the impact of the tariff increase on consumers.

Meanwhile, out of the 10 million euros allocated to KEK to subsidize electricity in January 2022, a total of around 3 million euros has been spent.
